Some outdoor benches provide continuous seating such as benches surrounding a fire pit or connected to the inside of a deck railing proving that the width is limited only by your imagination and the space. In most cases that number falls around 24.
But its top can easily be too wide or too tall.
How wide should a woodworking bench be. Subtract four feet from that measurement and that s a good length for the top. The bench should be at least 51 inches wide if you plan on having two people sit on the bench but it can be 60 inches or more. But for most projects and pieces two feet should be sufficient.
The height of the work surface of your workbench can make a difference. If you re building a new bench use these guidelines to determine how high to make it. Your bench design cannot be too heavy or too long.
It should be the right height to fit you and the way you work. The depth of your workbench should ideally be no longer than your arm can reach across it. Many hand tool woodworkers though prefer a bench 1 or 2 inches lower allowing more leverage for hand plane and chisel use.
Find the wall where your workbench will go hint. Which side of my bench should the vise go on. If you already have a workbench you can use these guidelines to modify your bench height to make it more comfortable.
Pick the wall that has a window. I think your benchtop should be as long as possible. If you happen to be the type of woodworker that works with unusually large or wide pieces then you may want to add a few inches.
The standard height of 34 matches most tablesaw heights allowing the workbench to double as an outfeed support.
